UMY won 19th place in the 2020 Scimago Institutions Ranking

Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) in accordance with its taglines of “Young and Worldly” and “Excellent and Islamic” succeeded in placing 19th in the Indonesian version of the 2020 Scimago Institutions Rankings. The results of this ranking assess the classification of academic institutions in terms of research. The entries were then ranked using a composite indicator that combines three different sets of indicators based on research performance, innovation results and social impact as measured by website visibility. The UMY ranking is influenced by the large number of journal articles written by the UMY academic community in Scopus indexed journals, namely 673 journal articles that have been published in the last three years.

The Head of UMY Strategic Data and Information Center of the Planning and Development Agency (BPP UMY), Tony K. Hariadi, Ir., MT, IPM when contacted on Friday (19/6) stated that UMY’s Placement in the 2020 Scimago Institutions Ranking was based on the increase in the number of UMY articles in Scopus indexed articles. “Last year, UMY has sent quite a lot of Scopus journals. To date, there are 673 journal articles in Scopus. We have achieved this in only three years. From 2015 to 2016, we have increased the number of articles by more than 100 percent. Then, from 2018 there were 131 articles, in 2017 there were 164 articles, in 2019 there were 192 articles, and in the middle of 2020 there were 149 articles, so we hope that by the end of the year there will be 300 articles published on Scopus,” he explained.

Tony also stated that this success can also be seen from the many research collaborations conducted by UMY with other institutions in published journals. The increase in the rating is also seen from the large number of UMY journals cited by other institutions.

“The target is that by 2021 we will have reached 1000 journal articles, and will be able to rank QS World Ranking the following year. The number of articles citations will be increased by at least two citations per article, so there will be at least 2000 citations from journal articles. In addition, we aim to reach the top 10 of the Scimago Institutions Ranking in the future, “he added.

The same notion was conveyed by UMY Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Dr. Sukamta, S.T., M.T. When contacted on Thursday (6/18) he stated that the Scopus ranking was also influenced by UMY’s efforts to provide facilities for research training to lecturers and students at UMY. “What UMY has done is provide motivation, mobilization especially for lecturers and also postgraduate students to publish the results of their research or final project, dissertation, and thesis in international journals that are scopus indexed. Activities undertaken (to support publication) include science camp , or joint training in research and writing joint articles in order to increase the number of articles published in Scopus journals, if many lecturer articles are published in Scopus indexed journals, especially in the Q1 and Q2 categories, namely the highest quartile in the Scopus index, later it will increase the number of citations, and many people will refer to the work of the UMY lecturer. So, if many lecturers’ articles are cited by other writers outside UMY then that will later improve our ranking/impact factor in published papers, ” he explained.

Sukamta added that UMY would also improve the quality of innovation-based research under the innovation division and products of LP3M which had been running for the past two years. “We will continue to improve the innovation division and excellent products of LP3M UMY which have a database related to the research of lecturers with high Technology Readiness Level (TKT), so this innovation is supported by research, but based on high TKT research. For example TKT 6,7,8,9 has the potential to be patented, meaning that research has innovative research elements. The results can be applied in a technology and that will later contribute to the ranking in this field of innovation,” he concluded. (Sofia)
