Dr. Nanik Prasetyoningsih, SH, MH, lecturer at the Law Study Program of the UMY Faculty of Law and Arie Kusuma Paksi, Ph.D, lecturer at the UMY Faculty of Social and Political Sciences’ International Relations Study Program held a Community Service Program to explain the Case Settlement Assistance Acts of Domestic Violence in Becici Hamlet, Wonokerto Village, Turi District, Sleman Regency. This activity is part of the Community Service and Community Empowerment Program (KKN-PPM) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) with students of KKN UMY group 129.
Nanik stated that this activity was hosted due to the many cases of domestic violence that occur among the hamlet community. “Hamlet communities tend to allow domestic violence to occur in their neighbourhoods, because they think it is not their business and interfering in the affairs of neighboring households is not elegant,” she said.
The truth is, hamlet communities as neighbours have obligations stated by Constitution 23 of 2004 concerning the Elimination of Domestic Violence to take preventive measures and deal with domestic violence. “Everyone who hears, sees, or knows about domestic violence is required to make efforts in accordance with the limits of their ability to prevent domestic violence,” explained Nanik again.
Therefore, Nanik and her team held three series of activities in counselling and simulation, namely the socialization of domestic violence behaviour according to Constitution Number 23 of 2004 concerning the Elimination of Domestic Violence, which was held on (13/1) in the Becici Hamlet Hall, Pulesari. “The second activity of legal counselling discusses the community’s legal responsibilities, that the right to protect children and other family members is the responsibility of everyone, not just family and children. We performed this counselling session on February 2nd, 2020,” she explained.
The third activity was meant to assist PKDRT cadres in handling cases of domestic violence. “This PKDRT cadre mentoring activity was carried out to simulating prevention of domestic violence. We did this simulation 5 times. It is hoped that by conducting a simulation, PKDRT cadres can understand the right ways to prevent domestic violence and handle it immediately,” Nanik added.
The Becici hamlet community gave a good response to these activities. The residents were very enthusiastic about attending counselling. Likewise, the PKDRT cadres were very enthusiastic in conducting simulations. The Work Program for the Elimination of Domestic Violence aims to increase the understanding and knowledge of citizens regarding domestic violence.
