Being successful young entrepreneurs is one of the dreams of students, and the entrepreneurship should begin as early as possible. Thus, Student Entrepreneurship and Business Incubator (SEBI) of UMY conducted Student Entrepreneurship Expo at Lapangan Bintang of UMY on Tuesday (19/4).

Rector of UMY, Prof. Bambang Cipto, M.A. highly supported the expo and believed that it will benefit students. “Students have been gaining knowledge at class, while the entrepreneurship expo gets them out of class and train them to do entrepreneurship,” Prof. Bambang conveyed.

He emphasized the significance of entrepreneurship despite a small business since the business will become training down for students so that they can be successful entrepreneurs. “For instance, Jack Ma, the richest person in China or the founder and chairman of Alibaba, was an English teacher but he is now a rich businessman. Indeed, students can be much better than him,” Bambang wished.

The entrepreneurship expo was one of the event series of Student Entrepreneurship Festival 2016 organizes since March. Chairperson of SEBI, RR. Sri Handari Wahyuningsih, S.E., M.Si. informed that the expo participants were students of all departments at UMy proposing a proposal and passing administrative selection. “There were 170 groups submitted entrepreneurship proposals, but only 66 groups were selected to join the expo,” Sri Handari told.

She inserted that the entrepreneur expo aimed at creating entrepreneurship learning atmosphere for students. “The student creativity will also be assessed. The assessor team will select the groups to be funded by university to commence their business. There will be product test, readiness and feasibility evaluation, and interview,” Sri mentioned.

She also said that the expo participants, in fact, were from not only the groups handing over proposals but also student activity units, faculties, department student association, and SEBI community comprising 55 groups.

“UMY will fund the business based on the feasibility. For example, UMY provides ten million rupiahs for technopreneurship, five million rupiahs for creative products, and three million rupiahs for culinary food,” Sri Handari ended.
