After performing Macbeth on 21 December 2015 at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta, Teater Tangga of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) showed the performance on Monday (11/1) at Convert Hall of Taman Budaya Yogyakarta (TBY). Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare in 1606 when Elizabeth I led the Great Britain. It told that a general killed Duncan, King of Scotland to usurp the throne. However, after grabbing the throne, Macbeth became paranoia and led despotically so that it led to the bloodshed. Macbeth was the shortest tragic script of Shakespeare, but it was considered the strongest script,” stated Muhammad Yudha Pratama, a director of the performance.

He mentioned that the Macbeth performance was played by 60 members of Teater Tangga of UMY, and it was the 72th performance of the theater club since it was established in 1994. “Alhamdulillah, we got good response when we performed in Jakarta, and so did people in Yogyakarta,” he expressed.

Macbeth was chosen since it was a huge momentum for theater world. “I think that Macbeth displayed the fundamental function of all artistic elements supporting the stage as a room to represent ideas and interests, and the significant impacts of Macbeth are on the process of adaptation,” he conveyed.

Teater Tangga attempted to perform Macbeth in modern way so that people of all levels can watch the performance. “We wish that Macbeth could answer the changes and remain relevant to this era,” he expected,

Additionally, head of the performance production of Macbath Rizkiana Nur told that the performance needed long preparation. “We have prepared for the performance in Jakarta and Yogyakarta for eight months. One of the barriers was how to attract people to watch the performance, but it was the part of the performance,” she ended.
