Government Ought to Learn from Said Tuhuleley to Empower the Poor

Said Tuhuleley might not be quite famed, but he assisted government a lot in empowering Mustadl’affin (the poor). Government were lack of concern of farmers, labors, fishermen, people in remote areas, small business, and the disabled. Thus, government should focus on the social and economic orders in Indonesia.

“We cannot be far apart from regional and global context. For instance, China has essential roles in world economy, and dominated a quarter billion of top universities. On the contrary, Indonesia remains week in economy and social,” stated Prof. Dr. Amien Rais in an event of reflection of end year 2015 organizes by Community Empowerment Council (MPM) of Muhammadiyah. The event was conducted on (30/12) at Building of Muhammadiyah, Yogyakarta.

The reflection raised theme of ‘Thoughts and Community Empowerment of Said Tuhuleley’. Amien conveyed that Said was the one who cared of people experiencing social and economic deprivations. He mentioned that there were more that 20% children living in poverty threshold. “Said was a firm person caring about the poor,” he thought.

One example of Said’s dedication to the poor was the establishment of Agricultural Education and Training Center in Banjarnegara. Said also created cadres and motivated young generation to develop and love agriculture. A lot of achievements obtained by the disabled of MPM which Said led for ten years. He was also the activist of the development of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY).

Besides, Buya Syafi’i Ma’arif becoming one of the speakers of the event maintained that 90% of the poor are Muslims. “The people remain poor since they have not getting up from poverty. They get weak due to policy of political elites. In fact, the poor are sick of the sovereigns thinking about their own interest,” he contended.

Syafi’i argued that, if each area has a leader as Said, the poor in Indonesia would alleviate eventually. What can be learned from Said Tuhuleley is that he always wanted something perfect, disciplined, and punctual. “To be a leader like Said, be truly graduates, big Islamic scholars, and do not perform everything halfheartedly. Dream big and do not believe failure,” Syafi’i advised.
