Department of Informatics Engineering of UMY Should Regard Swarm Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been inextricable from people’s daily activities. The use of AI can be found in phones, computers, cars, and other appliances. Indeed, AI is utilized on phone applications as social media which provide recommendations for various entertainments or shows we may like. However, rapid technology development demands the AI to be improved, to turn into Swarm Intelligence (SI).

At a public lecture conducted by Department of Informatics Engineering of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) on Wednesday (5/12) at Stadium General Room of Faculty of Engineering of UMY, Head of Data Science Lab from School of Computing Universiti Utara Malaysia Prof. Dr. Ku Ruhana Ku Mahamud stated that AI is a mean to drive a computer think. “We were accustomed to employing automatic tools, but today they will be able to think using AI. AI is simply defined as a thinking machine to ease people’s daily activities. The AI is distinguished from an automatic machine since the main feature of AI is that it can do multi-tasks and take necessary actions. For instance, a smartphone has a personal assistant such as Siri or Google Assistant. Another example is Tesla, a smart car producer applying AI in its products which possess self-driving capability and can predict when they have to take a turn or stop,” she explained.

Ruhana stated that AI turns into SI to enhance machine capability in overcoming issues. “SI refers to the collective behavior emerging from simple agents, colonizing animals, su as birds and ants. Besides, today’s trend is AI development to create artificial SI to be implemented in a group of machine units. It aims to optimize performance of a system to interact with each unit in the group and to distribute tasks of each unit,” she explained.

SI is an answer to coin machines which can take a proper action. “For instance, the use of a SI system on drones to cope with disaster issues. The drones can be used as unity and take a necessary action. The drones can maneuver to avoid barriers or adjust flight altitude when strong wind occurs. In fact, SI can optimally and widely be implemented in data mining,” maintained Ruhana.

She also encouraged students of the Department of Informatics Engineering of UMY to explore the SI development because today’s trend shows high industry interests in the SI and the system enables computers to work optimally.
