Alhamdulillah, KPI of UMY Maintains ‘A’ Accreditation

Islamic Communication and Broadcasting Department (KPI) of Islamic Faculty of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) successfully maintain ‘A’ accreditation which has been obtained since 2010. After accreditation visitation by National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education (BAN-PT), Ministry of National Education (Kemendiknas) on 23 November 2013, KPI of UMY was accredited A. Based on the decree of BAN-PT No. 1262/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/XII/2015 received by KPI of UMY, the accreditation is valid till 2020. The ‘A’ accreditation shows that KPI of UMY can become the foremost department in Southeast Asia, in line with UMY’s tagline ‘Muda Mendunia’ (Young and Global).

In an interview on Monday (1/2) at his office Head of KPI, Fathurrahman Kamal, Lc. M.Si. stated that a mission of KPI of UMY is to become the foremost university in South Asia like University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia. “Thus, this department has been cooperated with overseas university, started from universities in Malaysia,” he told. The cooperation supported the department to maintain the ‘A’ accreditation.

The accreditation score also escalated. The score in 2010 was 365, and the score of this year was 369. “The score increased, and 369 is quite high. BAN-PT assessed a number of aspects like vision and missions, organizational structure management, student management, student ration, research and community service, facilities, finance, the use of information technology, and cooperation with overseas institution,” he mentioned.

Fathurrahman said that being able to maintain the accreditation does not mean that the department quits fostering the quality of teaching and education. KPI of UMY has formulated three plans to enhance the quality. “First, the department vision and mission will be reconstructed so that the department curriculum is no longer ‘curriculum plus’ but a curriculum having two concerns, namely Broadcasting and Journalism, as well as Islamic Communication and Counseling. Second, international class will be initiated, and the medium instruction will use Arabic that this department will cooperate with Asia Muslim Charity Foundation (AMCF) and Dubai United Arab Emirates. Third, a linear program, Master of Islamic Communication and Counseling, will be initiated. Those are three formulations to maintain ‘A’ accreditation. The department is now preparing in order that all the formulations can be brought into reality,” he ended.
