Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) is one of destination places to gain knowledge of other educational institutions. Two educational institutions came to UMY in this occasion. Those were SMK Muhammadiyah Gubuk, Grobokan, Purwodadi – Jawa Tengah and Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
Those two educational institutions’ visiting UMY aimed at obtaining and sharing knowledge with UMY. On Wednesday (29/10) in Mechanical Engineering Laboratory of UMY, Head of Light Vehicle Engineering of SMK Gubuk, Samsul, stated that there were four aspects to achieve in the visit. “First, we would like to learn from Department of Mechanical Engineering of UMY. Second, we would like to bring science and technology in our students. Third, we would like to introduce the development of faculties in the university. Last, we are eager to encourage in order that students are willing to enroll at a higher level,” he told.
Samsul added that SMK students to date focused on two options only after graduating, applying for jobs or enrolling at a university. “However, noticing social aspect, most of our students choose earning a living after graduating. We have to encourage them to continue their study at a university so that they will get guidance immediately from the university,” stated this teacher whose 32 students come along this visit.
Additionally, in the other place, the Vice Chancellor III of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Dr. Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim M.A., conveyed that the visit to UMY, particularly to University Residence (Unires) of UMY, pointed at finding out aspects of management and student development. He argued that, as the same as Islamic university, it is necessary to conducting a meeting to establish genuine young generation. “They are outstanding on not only science and technology but also their personality,” he uttered when giving welcoming remark among staff representatives of Unires UMY in Meeting Room Male Unires. Sudarnato and several lecture representatives of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah came as well.
Sudarnoto also said that the challenge of Indonesia today had been getting enormous. Hence, it is essential to give intensive consultation for young generation. One of them was through student consultation under the auspices of a dormitory or Islamic boarding school. “We hope that, after this discussion, we could cooperate between UIN Syarif and UMY in all various aspects, especially in either giving student consultation or inviting lecturers from other universities to give the consultation,” he expected.
