Globalization has become a social phenomenon bringing benefits to human beings and interconnecting places in the world. However, the phenomenon also brings negative impacts.
To prevent the negative impacts, Al-Qur’an should become the main reference (Al Huda) to confront the globalization and to stir an association.
A keynote speaker of public lecture of Al-Qur’an Festival of Muhammadiyah/Aisyiyah-affiliated universities at Sportorium of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) on Wednesday (10/8), M. Habib Chirzin from International Institute of Islamic Thought, presented ‘A Paradox and the End of Globalization Entail New Mind Map to Create Knowledge and Civilization’.
Habib stated that globalization eases people. “Information is now easily to get. A proverb ‘The world is on your finger’ refers to habits to gain information from all over the world through gadget,” he conveyed.
Nevertheless, the easiness sometimes leads to negative impacts such as pornography. “Pornography is vulgar. Violence and instant culture often displayed on media are cultural domination of globalization which unconsciously influences domestic life,” he said.
Changing mindset and using Al-Qur’an as the main reference are necessary to avoid the negative impacts. “The new mind map is essential to face globalization. The way is utilizing Al-Qur’an as the main source. The concept of ‘Rahmat’ and ‘Busyra’ is a key in line with community empowerment,” he declared.
In fact, Muhammadiyah has provided examples of the concept. “Kyai Ahmad Dahlan establish Muhammadiyah with the spirit of renewal, ruhul-intiqaad (the spirit of criticism), ruh al-taftisy (the spirit of inequity), and ruh al ikhira’ (the spirit of innovation) included in Al-Qur’an. It shows that Al-Qur’an provides methodology to enhance critical competence and timeless spirit,” he mentioned.
In the end of his lecture, Habib appreciated Muhammadiyah-affiliated universities for the consistence to become world class universities with Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan. “Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan become the soul of Muhammadiyah-affiliated universities. The Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan will lead of Muhammadiyah-affiliated universities ,” to be world class universities,” he ended.
