Moral and Quality of Self are Vital for Surviving in the Disruptive Era

The times are always changing, and they have different problems and obstacles to conquer. Lately, we are entering a disruptive era and the 4.0 Industrial Revolution. To face and solve any problems in the future, universities must adapt by increasing the quality of human resources (SDM) and make use of any opportunities. In addition, they also need to not depend on technology, but at the same time, they must master it.

Rector of Universitas Pembangunan Jaya (UPJ) Leenawaty Limantara M.Sc., PhD explained that to be able to survive in this fast-paced world, universities must be flexible when dealing with any problems. She also stated that the pace of this world cannot be stopped, so bodies of education must be able to adapt well.

“We must be flexible and adaptable so we can continue to grow and develop. Invest in both facilities and human resources. they are the most valuable resource and they have great potential in the future,” she stated when speaking in the UMY Structural Council’s Leadership Training session themed “Challenges for Higher Education in the 4.0 Industrial Revolution Era” hosted in the Amphitheatre of K.H Ibrahim Building, UMY Central Campus on Thursday (8/8).

In addition, Leenawaty also reminded the listeners that knowledge given to the students will be of use not only for the present but also for the future. Being an educator means knowing how to accept new knowledge and not be beholden to past experiences.

“As educators, we must teach our students what will happen in the future. In addition, we must also help them to solve problems they might face in the future. Do not focus on the knowledge we already have, and be open to change,” she stated.

At the end of her session, Leenawaty stated that soft skill is important in this technologically advanced era. She explained that technology cannot be depended to increase the quality of a person or an organization. However, good habit and manners are valuable for any advancement.

“Failure isn’t always caused by the lack of knowledge or technology, it can also be the lack of a good attitude. Effective communication is key to giving instructions to fellow employees or those who for you. If we can survive in a high-pressure job, we can reap great benefits,” She stated.

At the same occasion, Hilman Latief, M.A., Ph.D., UMY’s Vice-Rector of Student Affairs, Alumni, and AIK UMY stated that good social skills are very important. This is because as technology advances, human values must also improve. “Now, we must teach social values to everyone, and not let technological advancement cost it,” Hilman stated. (ak)
