The Karawitan Dance Student Activity Unit of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UKM Sentakamudya UMY) succeeded in bringing home a title after successfully winning  third place in the UB Brawijaya XXVII Dance Festival 8-9 November 2019. The national-level championship was participated by participants from various universities in Indonesia.

The team manager, Kurniawati Agung Sejati explained that UMY sent 19 personnel to perform in this championship. They were divided into two groups of 10 musicians and 7 dancers. She also mentioned that UKM Sentakamudya UMY performed a dance entitled “Krida Asmara Tura” from the love story of Roro Mendut.

“Yesterday, we brought a lot of dancers, musicians, and officials. At the competition, we performed a dry run and the actual show on the same day, November 9th. Alhamdulillah, we managed to win third place by performing something from the Roro Mendut Folktale,” She stated to the Journalist team of UMY Office of Human Resources and Protocol when interviewed on Tuesday (19/11).

All personnel have been training for an entire month to prepare for this competition. It begins with the selection of player by the coach, then the players who have been selected trained separately with musicians. In the end, all the players practised simultaneously.

One of the musicians, Kholik Al Amin A. Sidik, stated that there were some setbacks when performing in Malang. He stated that there are some differences in the materials of the musical instruments in UMY and in the competition, but that hurdle was swiftly overcome by the musicians.

“Yesterday we didn’t bring a lot of musical instruments to perform because the committee said they would provide them. It turns out that the tools are different from what we normally use on campus. We use iron material here, but they use brass there. So that the sounds they made are also different, but we dealt with it quickly and everything went smoothly,” he said.

The presence of UKM Sentakamudya UMY helps preserve local and national culture in the younger generation. With the advancement of information technology, foreign countries have been introduced and affected the Indonesian people. (ak)
