The logo of UMY is derived from the logo of the Muhammadiyah organization. The UMY logo has a sun emitting twelve yellow lights.
At the center of the sun, the word “Muhammad” was written in Arabic which means followers of Muhammad.
At the outer circle, the ‘syahadat’ (confession of faith) of Muslims is written in Arabic: “Asyhadu Anlaa ilaaha illa Allah” which means ‘I bear witness that no one deserves to be the worshiped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah’.
The sun shows the vitality and dynamics emitted by itself, bringing life to others.
Muhammadiyah analogizes itself as the Sun enlightening spiritual lives that the core is on creed syahadatain (Al-Anfal: 24).
The twelve sides of the Sun represent the souls of the Hawary people (twelve companions of Prophet Isa) who fought for the dignity of Islam. Muhammadiyah sees itself as a Hawary having high enthusiasm for amar ma’ruf nahi munkar, and whatever, whenever, and wherever Muhammadiyah performs is for Allah. (As-Shaff: 14).
The Sun is the core of the University logo emphasizing that UMY is one of the charitable efforts of Muhammadiyah upholding the principles of Muhammadiyah where all the activities of UMY are in line with the belief and goals of Muhammadiyah.
The ‘rice and cotton’ encircling the Sun show welfare and prosperity.
UMY is a higher education institution established by Muhammadiyah aimed at creating noble Muslims who will inherit the privilege and authority of building prosperous lives.
The five petals encircling the sun surrounding the rice and cotton represent the Pancasila being the official philosophical foundation of Indonesia which was established based on the five fundamental principles of Islam, namely: Syahadat, prayer, charity, fasting, and pilgrimage to Mecca.
The words “Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta” are written surrounding the rice and cotton.
All of the symbols have green leaf background referring to patience, accuracy, and sincerity underlying UMY’s activities and endeavors performed for Allah.
UMY’s flag is colored green with the logo of UMY and writings in gold. Here are the faculty flag colors:
Unggul dan Islami (Excellence and Islamic values) are the guiding principles of UMY’s staff, faculty and administration unified in achieving the University goal.
