KKN UMY Develops Moringa and Indigofera Plants to Mitigate Landslides

The Pilangrejo village is one of the areas that is prone to landslides. There have been several landslides in the are in the last 10 years. Although it did not cause many casualties, the incident had an economic impact on the community.

Based on this fact, the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) Social Services (KKN) Team and the Community Partnership Program tries to prevent landslides by developing Moringa and Indigofera plants in Pilangrejo Village, especially in Kaligede and Danyangan Hamlets. UMY Agribusiness Study Program Lecturer Oki Wijaya, S.P., M.P., who was also the initiator of this activity said that Moringa plants have high economic value, while Indigofera is a plant that serves as an alternative to animal feed.

“These plants can also be used as a barrier to landslides and for soil conservation. The series of activities carried out include the socialization of plant benefits, distribution of seeds, plant care, processing, and the administration of Indigofera leaf counters and Moringa powder making tools,” he said when contacted on Thursday ( 30/1).

Oki added that village development must in fact include 3 elements, growth, equity, and sustainability. If these three elements are fulfilled, then the village can feel the impact of the development, namely improving the welfare of the community which at the same time can function to preserve nature.

For the continuation of this activity, Oki and his team collaborated with Creavill, a consultant engaged in village development. “Creavill will help UMY in assisting Pilangrejo Village with the Sociopreneur model. One of the efforts to sustain this activity is to guarantee the market for the production of the two crops. Market guarantees are always a good reason for the community to plant a certain commodity,” Oki added.

Meanwhile, the Head of Kaligede Hamlet, Widodo said that the KKN activities and community service from UMY this time were different from the usual KKN. “The Social Services Program is structured this time and the community hopes that this activity can solve village problems, namely landslides and poverty,” he said.
