Reading becomes a demand for people to confront their complex lives. Their reading interest should be increased to enhance human resources; and indeed, the interest is a characteristic of educated people.

The notion underlay Muhsin Kalida to write research entitled ‘Roles of TBM’s Creative Learning in Escalating Children’s Reading Interest (A Comparative Study between TBM Yogyakarta and Community Library of Kuala Lumpur Malaysia). At his dissertation on 21 September, Muhsin mentioned that reading interest in Indonesia, particularly among children, is considered low. TBM standing for Taman Bacaan Masyarakat (library) is an alternative as a learning center to increase children’s reading interest. It is a program by Directorate for Community Education Development (Ditbindikmas), Directorate General for Early Childhood, Non-Formal and Informal Education (Dirjend PAUDNI), and Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. The TBM is expected to possess a strategic role in creating reading society.

“The creative learning at TBM can develop community potential,” conveyed Muhsin. He also explained that the TBM has three services, namely widya-pustaka that the TBM provides references such as text books, popular books, popular science, and records on various media; widya-loka that the TBM is a medium for discussion, book review, gathering and others; and widya-budaya that the TBM is a place to express ideas and foster community talents such as writing, playing roles, dancing, and making batik.

The TBM also offers other programs such as parenting, writing class, book practices, partnership class, reptile introduction, a book rent service, dream writing, wrapping gifts, making origami, reading fast, and understanding contents. “The creative learning may motivate to read,” wished Muhsin.

Additionally, Muhsin was the 51st graduate from Doctoral Program of Psychology of Islamic Education with high distinction as mentioned by one of the dissertation examiners Sri Atmaja P. Rosyidi, M.Sc.Eng., Ph.D.
