University of Maryland America Liaises with JKSG UMY to Research The Implementation of REDD+ in Indonesia

In conducting the research on REDD+ in Indonesia, University of Maryland America invitesJusuf Kalla School of Government of Universitas MuhammadiyahYogyakarta (JKSG-UMY). REDD+ is an acronym for ‘Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation,’ which is a global mechanism that aims at slowing global climate change by providing compensation to developing countries to protect their forests.

This is asserted by Ashley Marie Emrici, a Teaching Assistant from the University of Maryland America, in an open discussion with the theme “REDD Policy and Global Environment” at the meeting room of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, UMY integrated campus, Tuesday (5/6).

According to Ashley, many developed countries and developing countries have agreed to implement REDD+ and one of them is Indonesia due to the fact that Indonesia has the third largest forest area in the world. “In addition, Indonesia is also one of the leading countries in the implementation of REDD+ so that it becomes important to see how its implementation is,” she explained.

Ashley expressed that the idea of this REDD+ is related to the issue of ‘forest degradation’, agroforestry, agriculture, conservation and sustainable management of forests, reforestation and forest restoration, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks. “These issuesseems easy and simple but the implementation in the field will be much more difficult because there will be various interests in it” she said.

Ashley further explainedthat the research is related to the policy given by the government as well as the use of funds that must be received by the forest community transparently and efficiently. “This study will take approximately two months and will be conducted in Yogyakarta Special Province and in some areas in Kalimantan and will be conducted together with the scholars from JKSG UMY” she explained.

In line with what Ashley has mentioned, the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of UMY, Dr. Achmad Nurmandi, M.Sc., responded positively to the cooperation offered by the University of Maryland America. “We are absolutely willing to cooperate with the university since in JKSG UMY, we also have the same concentration associated with the government” he explained.

Also,Achmad Nurmandi added that the research will be beneficial for scholars, especially lecturers for it will increase the experience and also the insight. “Besides, it also shows the existence of JKSG UMY to participate in researching the implementation of this international program, especially in Indonesia,” he concluded.
