Yogyakarta Sultanate Ought to Be Maintained

Sultanate of Yogyakarta is the most famous sultanate in maintaining cultures, customs, and traditions despite having affiliated to Indonesian government. Nevertheless, there was an internal conflict in the family of Yogyakarta Sultanate. It urged the community to engage in it as public concern on the existence of Yogyakarta sultanate. Thus, Yogyakarta sultanate should preserve its existence in both internal sultanate and community of Yogyakarta.

The aforementioned paragraph was the main idea of a limited discussion organized by Public Relation and Protocol Bureau of UMY to respond Pros and Cons of Sabda (Proclamation) of Yogyakarta Palace King. It had Tunjung Sulaksono, S.IP., M.Si., as the keynote speaker of the discussion which was conducted on Friday (8/5) at Governmental Studies (IP) of UMY. He stated that Sultanate has definitely confronted internal conflicts regarding succession. However, conflicts of sultanate that was in line with bloody showdown should not occur nowadays anymore. “There are a lot of other more civilized and humane ways to resolve the conflicts. What happened should not ensue right now just because the succession has not been overcome,” he conveyed.

In term of governance structure, the governmental study expert of UMY continued, the conflict of succession in internal of Yogyakarta Palace did not affect Yogyakarta community immediately. For one reason, Yogyakarta Palace has been integrated with local government so that what ensued in Yogyakarta Palace had nothing to do with the public of Yogyakarta. “Yogyakarta sultanate has been integrated with local government. UUK (law of privilege) reinforce that Sultan of Yogyakarta is the Governor of Yogyakarta. Then, Sultan recently uttered ‘Sabda Raja’ (King’s Proclamation) of succession. The decision brought impacts on public involvement psychologically or on other interests since it was dealing with the next leader of Yogyakarta,” he mentioned.

Tunjung noticed that it was assumed Sabda Raja could be fine through naming his eldest daughter Mangkubumi. It proved that Sultan was eager to name GKR Pambayun crown princess. On contrast Yogyakarta Special Region Regulations (Perdais) established that Governor of Yogyakarta must be a man. “On the other hand, there are Sultan’s brothers who have rights for it. It would be different if Sultan does have any brother. This circumstance emerged conflicts in the family of Yogyakarta Sultanate. It does not matter of gender sensitivity but it is dealing with issues of cultures, traditions, and customs,” he argued.

Therefore, the lecturer of Governmental Studies of UMY expected that the conflicts could be overcome by Yogyakarta Sultanate. He also wished that Peugeran which is only for internal of Palace could be shared to public of Yogyakarta. He contended that public is confused about the true system of succession of Yogyakarta sultanate.

“What occurred obviously needs concern because Yogyakarta sultanate is the leader, indeed. Sultan as an individual or the main figure of Yogyakarta sultanate is much honored. However, I think that this conflict would affect public trust to Sultan and Yogyakarta sultanate. Public respect may reduce, and the role model would diminish if this issue has not been coped with yet. Hence, we hope that the conflict could be solved by the palace,” he ended.
