Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with three universities in Taiwan. The MoU signing aimed at enhancing cooperation between UMY and other universities both in Indonesia and overseas.
Head of International Relations Affairs of UMY Tony K. Hariadi., M.Eng told that UMY represented by Dean of Engineering Faculty Jazaul Ihsan, Ph.D., Vice Dean of Engineering Faculty Slamet Riyadi, Ph.D., and Aris Widyo Nugroho, Ph.D. visited National Chung Cheng University, National Taipei University of Technology, and National Central University on 21-25 May.
“The cooperation with National Chung Cheng University is between both Engineering Faculties of both parties. UMY also signed MoU with National Central University in November 2016, but it was only faculty cooperation. In this visit, we would like to expand the cooperation in the university level. Besides, UMY cooperates with National Taipei University of Technology in the university level,” stated Tony in an interview on Tuesday (6/6).
“The MoU encompasses joint research, joint conference, student exchange, staff exchange, and others. In September 2017, a lecturer of National Chung Cheng will teach ate Electrical Engineering Department of UMY for a month. Meanwhile, the cooperation with National Central university is in term of sending UMY’s lecturers to pursue their doctoral degree at the university,” explained Toni.
The cooperation, particularly having the visiting lecturer, will enhance internationalization points of UMY. The foreign lecturer is also expected to be able to share knowledge and experience to students of UMY. “The lecturer will absolutely share research experience and learning system of their home country to UMY’s students so that they can broaden their horizons. Indeed, the lecturer is required to conduct joint research with UMY’s lecturers,” maintained Tony.
Additionally, UMY has been cooperated with several institutions in Taiwan such as Central Taiwan University of Science and Technology (CTUST), National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), Tamkang University, and I-Shou University in Kaohsiung. A number of lecturers of UMY graduated from universities in Taiwan such as Prof. Agus and Mr. Wida from Department of Electrical Engineering. Some of UMY’s alumni also pursued their study at universities in Taiwan.
Tony asserted that the number of university partners will affect a university accreditation. “The number also influence our ranking in international levels. For instance, if UMY cooperates with 500 top universities in the world, UMY’s ranking in an international level will increase. Besides, cooperating with foreign universities is expected to enhance the research and publication of UMY and UMY’s alumni can be accepted at the foreign universities,” he ended.
