Teachers Should Uphold Code of Ethics in Conducting Research and Publishing Academic Journals

Teachers should uphold code of ethics in conducting research and publishing such as avoiding plagiarism. Thus, their quality should be enhanced.

To achieve the purpose, Research, Publication, and Community Service Body (LP3M) collaborating with Ministry of Research and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti) conducted a Workshop on Academic Publication 2017 for lecturers of higher education institutions in Indonesia on Wednesday (20/9) at A.R. Fachruddin A of UMY.

A professor of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) Wasmen Manalu stated that research and publishing should possess obvious objectives and can contribute to the development of sciences, academic areas, and teaching and learning materials. “The purpose of doing research should be aimed to find out truth since the findings will be valuable to foster sciences, technology, and innovations which benefit civilization and welfare of people. Besides, lecturers should regard each aspect of conducting research in detail so that they can be responsible for their research results. Indeed, researchers are required to uphold code of ethics and refrain themselves from irresponsible acts. They should also be reasonable, maintain originality, be responsive, be able to work in team, have good attitude and high creativity,” declared Wasmen.

He also talked about several aspects that researchers should avoid when doing research. “Researchers should fabricate research findings, falsify research data, and plagiarize another work. They may also not use information without permission, be dishonest, extort the researcher and research assistance, and be reckless. Hence, all research procedures should be susceptible to error,” mentioned Wasmen.

“There are several characters that researchers should have. First, they have to be honest that they will not falsify research data as dishonesty will damage trust which becomes the basis of the development of sciences. Second, they should be trusted, may not plagiarize, and should respect others. Third, they have to be scrupulous to prevent mistakes, the use wrong methods, and human errors. These three aspects should be a motivation for the researchers. After this workshop, I expect that all lectures can behold every single aspect of doing research so that we gain the outcomes that we expect,” he ended.

In addition, the workshop participants were from University of AMIKOM, University of PGRI Yogyakarta, University of Respati, Universitas Sarjana Wiyata Taman Siswa, Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta, University of Mercu Buana, University of Kristen Duta Wacana, University of Sanata Dharma, Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Nasional, Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Adisutjipto, Universitas Aisyiyah Yogyakarta, STMIK El Rahmah and Politeknik LPP Yogyakarta. In the workshop, they discussed how to publish national and international journals and how to avoid journal predators.
