Students of UMY Socialize Active Smoker Prevention Level through Kinship Method

Roles of Indonesian government in coping with the issues of tobacco policies have been considered adequately good. There are a number of policies to overcome the high level of tobacco consumption in Indonesia. To bring the policy into reality, public, particularly students, is required to engage in supporting the policy and to be aware of the bad impacts of smoking for health. Noticing the circumstance. Students batch 2012 of International Program for Law and Sharia (IPOLS) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) conducted a community service (PKM-M), a program of DIKTI (Directorate General of Higher Education). The students were Elida Rahajeng Puspitasari, acting as the chief, M. Hazyar Arumbinang, Oki Dwi Saputra, and Fachrul Muhammad as the members. It was a program to encourage public health by not smoking in family environment.

In a interview in BHP on Tuesday (19/5), Elida informed that the program aimed at raising public awareness of caring about their environment and of not smoking in areas around their house, let alone in their own house. It also pointed at developing and implementing free smoking house for public, and supporting public health program, free smoking area, launched by the government. “This purpose of the program is to deal with the issues of high tobacco consumption in Indonesia, particularly among teenagers and children,” she stated.

The program was applied in Pendowoharjo, Bantul, Yogyakarta Special Religion. The program activities compassed of observation of field target, community, and team preparation; educative and kinship approach toward a youth organization of Pendowoharjo; mentoring the young organization during the program; and book launching. Elida inserted that they wrote a book as the output of the program. Contents of the book were regarding guidelines of diminishing tobacco consumption such as providing information of tobacco damages and giving warning to smokers.

Furthermore, they cooperated with MMTC UMY (Muhammadiyah Medical Tobacco Center) to assist the socialization. “We expect that this community service would reduce the tobacco consumption level among children. We also hope that we could organize this program in not only the village but other villages in Yogyakarta through young generation of each village,” she ended.
