The logo of UMY is sun emitting yellow light to twelve sides derived from the logo of Muhammadiyah.
In the center of the sun was written Muhammad in Arabic that means the followers of Muhammad.
The outer circle is written ‘syahadat’ of Muslims (confession of faith) in Arabic: “Asyhadu Anlaa ilaaha illa Allah”, meaning ‘I bear witness that no one deserves to be the worshiped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah’.
The sun shows the vitality and dynamics emitted by itself and bringing life to others.
Muhammadiyah analogizes itself as sun enlightening spiritual lives that the core is on creed syahadatain (Al-Anfal: 24).
Twelve sides of sunlight show the soul of Hawary people (twelve companions of Prophet Isa) who fought to the dignity of Islam. Muhammadiyah sees itself as a Hawary having high enthusiasm for amar ma’ruf nahi munkar, and whatever, whenever, and wherever Muhammadiyah performs is for Allah. (As-Shaff: 14).
The Sun becomes the university logo core emphasizing that UMY is one of the charitable efforts of Muhammadiyah upholding the principles of Muhammadiyah so that all the activities of UMY are in line with the belief and goals of Muhammadiyah.
‘Rice and cotton’ encircling the Sun show welfare and prosperity.
UMY is a higher education institution established by Muhammadiyah aiming at creating noble Muslims who become a successive authority to coin prosperous lives.
Five petals refer to Pancasila as the official philosophical foundation of Indonesia, and Islam established by five fundamental principles, namely.
Syahadat, prayer, charity, fasting, and pilgrimage to Mecca. The five petals encircle the sun surrounding the rice and cotton.
The words of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta are written surrounding the rice and cotton.
All of the symbols have green leaf background referring to patience, accuracy, and sincerity that underlie all of the university activities performed for Allah.
