Pharmacy students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), namely Komarudin and Aiyun Astiyanim, obtained the second runner up of a national scientific work competition, Medicine and Health Science Student Meeting (NEONSTING) 2016, conducted on Saturday-Sunday (30/4 – 1/5). Besides, Komarudin, Aiyun, and Danang Aji Wiguna became the winner of Indonesia Pharmacy Olympiad (OLFARNESIA) 2016 held on Friday-Sunday (29/4 – 1/5).
OLFARENSIA 2016 was organized by Department of Pharmacy of UMY at RS PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping, and the theme was ‘Pharmacotherapy of Nervous System’. There were 23 teams joining the event, and they were from Department of Pharmacy across Indonesia.
Komarudin informed that the competition comprised four rounds. After the first round, the quarter final was called Patient Counseling, the semi final round was Inter-professional Education (IPE) encompassing Bed Site Teaching (BST) and Tutorial, and the final round was Battle of Wits.
Komarudin conveyed that UMY told that UMY won over University of Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) and University of Sanata Dharma (USD). “UMY team gained 260 points, while UAD got 120 points, and USD received 70 points. My team utilized all learning materials of Pharmacotherapy of Nervous System,”Komarudin told.
In addition, Komarudin said that the NEONSTING 2016 was organized by BEM FKIK UMY. “The competition was joined by students of Department of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Midwifery, Acupuncture, Science of Nutrition, and Public Health,” Komarudin mentioned. The winner was University of Airlangga (Unair) and the runner up was University of Diponegoro (Undip).
The scientific work of Komarudin and Aiyun Astiyani discussed infectious diseases in line with the competition theme, ‘Infectious and Non-Infectious Diseases’. Their work was entitled ‘Innovation of Fixed Dose Combination (FDC) as Tuberculosis (TB) Treatment in Indonesia’.
The research examined the causes of the increasing number of TB sufferers and the treatment success is alleviating. “The research revealed that the patients’ obedience to drink medicine was due to boredom with consuming it and long term drug consuming (about 6 months). Thus, we attempted to find the solution in order that the patients are willing to drink their medicine,” Komarudin stated.
In fact, medicine of tuberculosis should be consumed two tablets a day whereas in the past patients had to drink six tablets a day. “Government has created a program from six tablets to two tablets that each tablet is the combination of three tablets, but the program does not enhance the patients’ obedience,” he told.
The notion of the Jelly Candy was inspired by that he often eats at pecel-lele restaurants. “Jelly Candy making needs gelatin while the gelatin was made from fishbone and chicken. After having the idea, I met my supervisors, Dra. Salmah Orbaniyah, M.Kes., Apt. and Nurul Maziyyah, M.Sc., Apt.,” he ended.
