‘Pakok’ and ‘Taro’: Games for Socializing the Impacts of Tobacco to Children

Based on data of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) in 2013, 21 billion children liked smoking since they were about 13-18 years old even though they recognized that smokers would got the risk twice to four times as coronary heart, lung cancer, and other zymotic. The circumstance inspired students of IPOLS (International Program of Laws Sharia) to conduct a community service entitled “Gencar Takok” Generasi Cerdas Tanpa Rokok (‘A Smart Generation Free Smoking). They were Andika Putra as the Chief, and Dicky Kurniawan, Diana Setiawati, Apriana Daru Prabowo, and Ahmad Zulfikar as the members.

The object of the community service was children in Pendowoharko, Bantul, Yogyakarta. Being interviewed in Law Department on Saturday (23/5), Andika Putra told that the Gencar Takok aimed at developing and socializing health life without tobacco to children through a creative educative game namely ‘Pakok and Taro’. Pakok stands for ‘Puzzle Anti Rokok’ (Free Smoking Puzzle) pointing at creating relationship among children to arrange a picture of the impact of tobacco. “While, Taro stands for ‘Tangga Rokok’ (Tobacco Stair), a game adapted from snakes and ladders. The game shows that smoking would bring much harm for health,” stated Andika.

Moreover, the children in Pendowoharjo would also write ‘Love Poem’ to enhance their writing poem skill. The poem should be addressed to smokers like friends, brothers, sisters, fathers, or family. “The socialization is to raising their awareness of the impacts of tobacco for health. We think that this program is an effective and easy way to raise children’s awareness because we employ games as the media that children love,” he asserted.

Andika also conveyed that children displayed positive responses during the socialization. They were enthusiastic about playing game by game. The program was conducted for three months, from March to May 2015, and was joined by 70 pupils of kindergarten (TK) and elementary school (SD).

Furthermore, Andika inserted that the program was proposed to Student Creativity Program (PKM) of Community Service of Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI) RI. Then, it would be presented in an international forum discussing tobacco control, namely ICTOH (Indonesian Conference on Tobacco or Health) on 27-29 May 2015 in Indonesia. ICTOH Youth Forum would be organized by Ministry of Health of Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkes RI) cooperated with Indonesian Public Health Expert.
