ASEAN Economic Community Perlu Disosialisasikan Lagi

ASEAN Economic Community Should Extensively Be Promoted

Many Indonesian people have not been familiar with ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) yet since the information of the ASEAN policy is disseminated through a top-down process, a policy made by the highest level, state officials, and shared to the lowest level, the people. That becomes the reason why the people are not interested in the issue so that the AEC should widely be promoted.

In a seminar and modal ASEAN on ‘Development of ASEAN Economic Cooperation toward ASEAN 2025’ at meeting hall of A.R. Fachruddin A on Thursday (20/4) conducted by Department of International Relations of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) collaborating with Directorate General of ASEAN Cooperation, a representative of Directorate General of ASEAN Cooperation Jed Sutoyo stated that the ignorance of the AEC may lead to the fear of the AEC issues, particularly the issue of foreign workers. An idea has emerged as Indonesian workers should compete with ASEAN workers who can freely come to ASEAN. “The idea is not true at all. The labor markers were not as open as people assume. The cooperation now is still focusing on equality of certification for several professions in ASEAN countries. The labor markets are managed by each country,” he informed.

Jed also regretted that many Indonesian people have not taken advantages of the AEC. In fact, the social media power in Indonesia are enormous to reach all ASEAN regions. “Many Indonesian entrepreneurs also have not spanned ASEAN markets due to an excess of domestic markets. Indeed, the ASEAN markets will bring a lot of benefits. We have to be optimistic. The entrepreneurs can utilize their social media to expand their markets to ASEAN countries,” he emphasized.

Additionally, the AEC initiated in 2015 is a mean of promoting economic, political, social, and cultural cooperation among ASEAN countries. The main idea is to drive Southeast Asia regions to be a single market and globally competitive production basis in free flow of goods, services, labors, investment, and capital among 10 ASEAN member states.
